Join us for a look at how the world’s largest democracy came to be. In this course, we will examine the history of the Indian independence movement from the series of events that created the Raj through the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru as India’s first prime minister. We will explore the dynamics and objectives of centuries of colonial rule in “The Jewel in the Crown of the British Empire.” Key areas of focus include the relationship between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, the role of Mahatma Gandhi, the effective use of nonviolent noncooperation with British rule, and the foundational struggles endured by the subcontinent’s fledgling nations.

Fee: $15
Wednesdays, Feb. 20 and 27, March 6, 13
and 27 and April 3
10am-2pm (come for all or part of the time)

Something new and exciting is coming to the Thomas Dunn Learning Center! One of our rooms is being converted into a place for creative learning and doing. We invite you to join Creatively Dunn to explore arts such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery, needlepoint, and much more. This will be a time and place where you can step away from the cares of the world and spend time working on projects of your choosing or participate in one with the rest of the group. Studies have shown that repetitive motion activities redirect our mental and physical focus away from anxietyinducing stimuli and, for a short while, help our minds slip into a passive, calming state. Working with a hand art is one way to accomplish this.

We will start with knitting and move on in whichever direction the group decides. Our instructor has been working with the hand arts for forty years and can teach many different techniques. In the knitting class, we will learn how to select yarn, how to knit and purl, and how to choose and read a pattern.

What to bring: A pair of size 8 knitting needles, either straight or circular, and a pair of scissors. You may also bring a beverage and a lunch.
